My year is starting with my heart full of gratitude - to my family and their unending support of my creative endeavors, and to my new collectors. Here are some installation photos of my artworks in their new homes. The bottom photo, showing "Windswept", will serve as a jumping off point for this home owner's redesign. They're changing their room from earthy browns to the colors in my painting.

Moving out!

Change can seem scary at first. An ending can feel empty, like there’s a hole. But gradually it begins to feel like breathing space and it's absolutely wonderful. Room for something brand new! Space to grow.

Last week I finished cleaning out my old studio and made the move into my new art studio. It felt strange. The old studio was mostly retail/gallery space, with a work space in the back. The new studio is smaller overall and nothing but work space! It's freshly painted and clean. There are tall walls to hang new paintings-in-progress with plenty of room to move - and dance and sing (hey, it happens:).

Let’s get this party started.

From a Dream

Maybe I ate too much on Thanksgiving, or the after dinner drinks really did a number on me. But since last Thursday, I've had some interesting dreams. One where I'm walking through a garden that reminds me of Costa Rica but it's really Spain or Chile (you know how you just know this in dreams), under a trellis filled with vines with flowers that are blooming as I walk through. The air is soft and humid but not thick. Leaves and hints of flowers are close and saturated, then distant and smoky. I couldn't stop thinking about it all weekend so I worked it out on the canvas and created this new painting entitled "Free Spirit".

Seeing Red

For some reason I'm on a red kick. Got a commission with a red color palette, did a small painting in reds for a fundraiser, and just covered a canvas in shades of red yesterday in my studio. Felt good.

With cooler weather in Atlanta, we had our first "comfort food" meal of the season last night: a roast cooked for 12 hours in the crock pot, rosemary potatoes, carrots, and buttery dinner rolls.

Taking my dog Ruby for a walk this morning before heading to the studio - love this fresh Autumn air. Can't wait to see how this season plays out in my paintings.

Here's to welcoming all the goodness that Fall brings!

Is Everything Bigger in Texas?

I try not to post things like "I'm walking down the street with my latte". But (here I go. . .) I do have to tell you, I just baked some banana bread and it smells great! Bananas, vanilla, walnut. Yum.

I wonder if the banana bread is bigger in Texas? I'm heading that way this weekend for the Bayou City Art Festival in downtown Houston so I hope to find out. Putting my cowboy boots on now.

When I'm traveling around to art shows, I meet a lot of people, many who are artists themselves. One of the questions I get over and over goes something like this: "I paint tight and detailed and can't seem to loosen up. How do you do it?"

The actual answer for me is that it's just how I paint. In fact, when I have to paint tight and detailed I feel like someone is strangling me. And I hate when that happens. So here's 4 approaches that will help you to loosen up when you paint. Try one or more and let me know if it helps!

use a large brush or palette knife (emphasis on LARGE)
paint using your non-dominant hand
have a drink (or do something to take the edge off :) After all, it's paint and canvas. There'll likely be many others so don't worry so much. The painting police won't arrest you if you mess it up.
stop at 90%. This tip is actually something that my colleague Bob Burridge recommends, so I can't take credit for this one. Bob also teaches some wonderful workshops to help you loosen up (click the link for more info).

When you ask someone what they do for a living, rarely will you hear them say "I want to change the world by doing __________". Instead they usually respond with "I work at such-n-such". For me the answer is that I'd like to change the world with my art - - by spreading a little beauty, a little joy, a moment of respite.

I believe this is what art does - it heals. Art connects with people on an emotional level and creates a vibe in a space that can make you feel joyful and uplifted. This is evidenced by the use of art in healthcare. Who wants to look at an ugly white wall when they're going to the doctor for an exam? You're probably already a little anxious to begin with and the last thing you need is to feel more uncomfortable. Lately there's been a surge of artwork being installed in hospitals, medical centers, and assisted living centers. This is because we all want to feel good - - or at least better. Particularly when we're sick.

Last weekend I met an art consultant who utilized some prints of my art in a sleep lab testing center. I've been told my artwork is relaxing. . . .but this really made me laugh! I sure hope the patients relax - - and then wake up again to enjoy my art.

The weather is finally cooling off here in the Atlanta area and for me my energy is renewed. There is much to be grateful for. I do my best to live in the moment (not always easy, to be sure). The art walk at my studio last week was wonderful! There were lots of people browsing and buying art, and I had some amazing conversations with folks about the importance of beauty in our lives. Treating yourself well, and surrounding yourself with what makes you happy - - pretty simply ideas but too often ignored.

My parents visited over Labor Day weekend and we had a blast! I'm lucky, I know. So many of my friends have lost their parents or their parents don't come to visit them.

I painted in my studio most of Labor Day and reflected on how much there is to be grateful for.

Ali Becker

A few weeks ago I was asked to partner with a young 7 y.o. artist by the name of Ali Becker to create a work of art to auction off at this year's Art & Jazz fundraiser for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). My new friend Ali was born with multiple heart defects and has had 2 open heart surgeries as well as other procedures at CHOA in order to keep her healthy. Congenital heart defects are the most common structural birth defect, affecting 1 out of every 125 liveborns in the United States. Ali's parents have been through an extremely emotional and difficult time during her short childhood. Thanks to the physicians at CHOA, Ali and her heart are in tip-top shape!

She was a delight to have in my studio where we created the painting "Art from the Heart", 36"x36", acrylic on gallery wrap canvas. I painted the landscape in the center, while Ali painted the "frame" and sides of the canvas.

I'm in the studio yesterday and my A/C wasn't working. It kind of died. At first I thought I was just having my regular waves of hot flashes. But no, there was just no cold air coming out of the vents. After contacting the repair guy (who I'm meeting up with today - - keep your fingers crossed), I sweated it out a little longer to finish a section of a new painting (I'll post images soon - well, as soon as I'm cooler :).

When I got home I decided to surf around regarding A/Cs and found that there is actually a "WikiHow" article on "how to cool yourself without air conditioning". One of the steps is to "turn off all heat sources". Really? Someone had to write that out as a "step"?

Perhaps the obvious isn't so obvious. As a kid I remember our A/C going out and Dad having perfectly round beads of sweat running down his angry red face while he "took a look". Meanwhile Mom told him to call the repair guy and the arguing ensued. Dad versus the repair guy. You already know how this one ends. We sweated it out over the next couple of days until Dad was worn out and the repair guy could come out. I remember Mom cooking dinner on the stove (one of the heat sources highlighted on WikiHow). Like many Dads in the 60's, my Dad was ready to eat when he walked in the door from work everyday at 5:30pm and Mom never missed a beat. But maybe they missed a step?

You've Gotta Love This

So I'm back in HOTlanta from Philly and just thinking about the whole Rittenhouse Square Show experience. Philadelphia is such a mix for the senses: you've got the history, the architecture, the well-heeled women in shiny modern skirts with frilly blouses long lashes and a dab of red lipstick walking by on their way to the office, tall dark and handsome 20-somethings in their suits who look like they've just walked off the pages of GQ, mixed in with a few homeless, a few drunks, and a guy with a monkey on his back. A 40ish guy wearing shorts and t-shirt was walking around Rittenhouse Square with a stuffed monkey on his back - (the monkey's) arms hanging around his shoulders, the body hanging low on his back, past his shorts. He had the same attitude as the younger GQ guys, but wore a monkey instead of a suit.

A totally drunk-as-a-skunk guy, reeking of alcohol and fresh burp smells saunters into my booth and looks around at all of the paintings rather closely. He focuses in on my "Outside of the Box" series of paintings, passes them, circles around, and returns. He smiles and exits my booth, presenting his swaying stinky self in front of me. "Hiya, I like the boxes. I work in concrete and are those concrete?" (nope, they're wood) "But I could make the boxes out of concrete and they'd be heavy (really?) since they're concrete but I could make them". He smiles, proud of his epiphany. "But I could make them. They'd be heavy" (where have I heard this before?). He stumbles along, smiling to himself.

An older gentleman with a chunk of baby-fine hair sticking up in the back walks into my booth carefully examining the artwork. He is thin-framed and delicate, his footsteps silent. Like an inspector of sorts, he goes from one painting to the next, then passes in front of my artist statement, tilts his head back and scrunches up his nose, squinting. He reads it word for word, circles around, looks my way and nods, and exits. Joins his wife and daughter who were waiting for him. I see them continue walking the show. A few booths later, he backtracks through the flow of traffic and approaches me. "Are you Ms. Tesla? I wanted to tell you that I like that you stated in your artist statement that the divine is within us all. I've always believed that."

You've just gotta love Philly. The Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is a gem: not just because of the city and it's cast of characters, but because this city knows and loves art. My "morning meditation" abstract paintings on paper nearly sold out, along with sales of paintings on birch and canvas. Thanks to all of my new collectors in Brooklyn, New Jersey, and downtown Philly!

It's been wonderful to be home and back in the studio for a full 2 weeks. Feels luxurious. The warm weather, sunny skies, and singing birds are great inspiration for my morning meditation. My days are beginning with an abstract painting on paper, and, of course, my morning coffee. Usually these meditative abstracts pile up over time in the studio and don't get out much. This year they'll be traveling with me to Philadelphia for the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show. Come on out and visit me there, booth #101.

Spring Fever?

Lately I've been doing a lot of experimentation in the studio in an abstract direction - - perhaps it's a need to express the sheer joy that the warmer spring weather brings or the sheer joy of living? Who knows, but it feels great - maybe I've got spring fever? Here are some of the works in progress at my studio -

How I lengthened my life in 2 afternoons

Some of you already know that my husband Simo was unexpectedly diagnosed with colorectal cancer 10 years ago at the age of 41. It was a COMPLETE shock at the time. He's always been healthy and had no known family history of cancer. Thanks to our thorough and astute primary care physician, however, what he thought was hemorrhoids (come on, we can talk about this!) turned out to be a 3.5cm tumor that had to be removed immediately followed by 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Simo had loads of side effects to nearly everything thrown at him and it was a rough year to say the least. He has since completely recovered.

(There's always a silver lining to every dark cloud, right? Simo's experience and ideas during his treatment inspired my "Outside of the Box" series of paintings. You can ready the story here.)

Not long after this entire ordeal I went ahead and had a baseline colonoscopy due to my family history of colon cancer. This baseline lets my doctor know how my colon usually looks so that future screenings can be compared to it. The prep wasn't so bad and the reassurance of knowing I had a healthy colon in exchange for an afternoon spent at the doctor's office was well worth it. If you're not sure what's involved to have screening for colon cancer, there's a short video you can watch from the American Cancer Society.

The other afternoon that lengthens my life is the one where I go for my annual mammogram. Again, its not that bad compared to the alternative of getting cancer. If its been awhile since you checked this off your "to-do" list, refresh your memory about breast cancer screening by clicking here.

Yes, I know I said my blog is about my art and my life as an artist. And it still is: in the past week I have learned about the deaths of 2 of my collectors - one from breast cancer, and one from colorectal cancer. Both untimely, both young. The news has more than rocked my world and I hope it will rock yours and prompt you to get screened for cancer by the end of 2011.

My husband and I just returned from the Winter Park Art Festival and all we have to say is "WOW"! What a show! The art is amazing - we were honored to be part of it with our new collaborative body of artwork (see: http://www.tesla-studios.com/). Weather was perfect and we're pretty sure the entire state was there! Thanks to all who made this a successful show - so many of our mixed media creations found new homes. :)

3 Steps to Happiness

1. View art: go to a gallery, attend an art festival, visit an artist's studio.
2. Fall in love with art. Go with your gut - usually the first thing that catches your eye is "the one". (No, it doesn't have to match your sofa). And . . . if you wake up the next day still thinking about it, it definitely is "the one".

My paintings are a brave look inward – revealing what lies beneath both literally and spiritually. Yogi’s call it the “divine flame” – the spark that motivates you in life. In Buddha’s words, “Look within, thou art the Buddha”, while Jesus taught us that “The kingdom of heaven is within you”. For me, painting is the most life affirming thing to do.

I've always liked this quote. The idea of persevering - brushing yourself off, and standing right back up.

Last week I went away to rejuvenate. For me going out of the country always brings immediate perspective. You realize how easy it is to get lost and busy in your own bubble. It's good to be back, and though its quite cold here in the Atlanta area this week (zero degrees!), the studio is rockin' with some new latin music and my brushes are happily dipping back into the paint.

People often ask me how I paint, what my process is, where do I get my inspiration. Essentially the answers to these questions can be summed up by telling you that I paint what I feel. All my life I have felt things very deeply. I keep a journal. I write poems, I sketch, I doodle. Empathy comes easily to me (sometimes, too easily). And I'm a big weeper. So many things in life just . . . move me.

Last week was frenetic. Running to the grocery store, stopping for gas, priming a canvas, picking up flowers, varnishing a painting, mailing the bills, running back to the grocery store, walking the dog, blowing leaves. Then, with one phone call everything . . . receded. Our neighbor lost his 2 year battle with brain cancer. He surpassed what the doctors predicted for survival. His will to live - his life force - strong and determined. The funeral was Saturday. A crisp, cool, sunny day. Breezy, leaves flying. Totally surreal. Small and subdued, a slide show flashing moments of his life on the wall. Smiles, nods, tissue. More tissue. It was hard to believe he was only 52. But in a letter from one of his sons written to his father, he explained that his Dad lived more life in one day than most do in a lifetime. That's what I'll remember most about him. He was alive and on fire for living. Every single day.

I spent time in the studio painting in silence after I heard the news. A blurry green-gray beginning to a drippy milky landscape. Not much else happened. I decided to wash my brushes and took a long walk.

About a week has passed since I started the painting. Today I put the first glaze of a color onto the canvas (other than a shade of gray). It felt good.

Mine is the fall. Though the leaves are making a mess of our deck already, the breezy cool nights are envigorating. As the earth continues it's journey around the sun the days are becoming shorter. Did you know that the earth's axis is tilted at 23.5 degrees? If it wasn't, countries near the poles would be cold and dark year round.

Next weekend I'll be at the Chastain Park Arts Festival in Atlanta, my last show scheduled for the year. Grab your jacket and come on down!

Yesterday my husband and I went to a panel discussion on creativity, spirituality, and the arts with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Richard Gere, and Alice Walker. It was an amazing experience! The feel and focus contrasted the physical self versus the inner (true) self. When an artist expresses their inner self through their work, truth and compassion are fully realized.

Watercolor magazine wrote, “Selwyn Garraway’s watercolors are a step into the past, a world reminiscent of an old-fashioned English village where life seemed more ordered and tranquil.” Born and raised in Trinidad during the time the Caribbean island was making its transition from a British colony to a republic, Selwyn received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He now resides in New York City.

Cat Tesla's artwork is an ongoing exploration of ethereal landscapes and organic abstract designs - either originating from Mother Nature or inspired by her - executed in mixed media on canvas and birch supports. Multiple layers of acrylic, oil glazes, and collage, combined with handmade clay pieces (the tiles in the work that she makes, dubbed “cookies”), combine the mediums she so enjoys. Southern Living Magazine described her work as complex, where “organic landscapes and abstract elements meet structured grids and lines”. Indeed she is an accomplished abstract and landscape painter, and in many of her works, the two are married. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Catherine “Cat” Tesla has lived in the Atlanta area for nearly half her life.

Press Release: Knoxville Museum of Art invites Cat Tesla for Artscapes 2010 Show

Each year, the Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art hand-picks artists to invite for its annual Artscapes Extravaganza, an art auction and gala to benefit the Knoxville Museum of Art. For the 2010 show, a set of 9 paintings from Cat Tesla’s “Outside of the Box” series will be among the works to choose from. Art lovers worldwide have become avid collectors of the series which combines acrylic, oil glazes, collage, and handmade clay tiles (dubbed “cookies”). Each spring Cat makes several hundred cookies at a local ceramics studio to use for her box paintings. “People are surprised by the fact that I work in both clay and mixed media painting and actually use them together in the same artwork”. Communicating in a visceral language, the mixed media series on birch is textured, glossy, and organic. This unexpected interaction between two- and three-dimensional mediums is a hallmark of Tesla’s art.

A retired genetic counselor previously on faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in the Department of Human Genetics in Atlanta, Georgia, Cat shows and sells her work at shows and galleries throughout the United States. Tesla graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health, with a M.S. in Human Genetics and studied graphic design at the Southeastern Center for the Arts in Atlanta. She has also studied encaustic painting and handbuilding in clay.

Truth be told, I'm a bit of a nerd.

One of the email subscriptions I have is to the New England Journal of Medicine - which in and of itself is not so nerdy. What is nerdy, is that I usually click on most of the links and read the articles. This week Greg Feero, Alan Guttmacher, and Francis Collins wrote an updated primer on genomic medicine. Genomic wa-hat?! Don't panic. This update to the 2002 article on the same topic (yeah, I have that one, too. . .sigh) has an interactive graphic showing DNA-sequencing technologies which is one of the best on the web. This article is a great resource to gain an appreciation of the impact of genetics on medicine, particularly since the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003.

The article also contains several interesting factoids that are usable at your next cocktail party. For instance, did you know that both cows and mustard plants have more genes than you or I? And, while you're looking around at everyone else at the party, thinking, "what the heck am I doing here with these people?", consider that you share about 99.6% of your DNA sequence with them. If that news causes you to consider another drink, you can rest assured that there is still a lot of individual difference between any two people's DNA - about 24 million basepairs worth. Which is about the size of a 4,000 page phonebook.

The varnish is nearly dry on this new painting entitled "Inner Light". It feels light and airy to me and reminds me of the cool breezy spring mornings we're having here in Georgia. (Probably because I painted this piece in the mornings over the past few weeks.) Lately I feel an expansiveness in my morning meditations before going into the studio - a space that is open for something new to emerge.

The painting below entitled "A Taste for Champagne" was painted in the late afternoon/early evenings over the past few weeks, with music blaring and me singing at the top of my lungs. With this one I somehow ended up with a lot of paint on myself, in my hair, on my shoes. And it felt good.

I'm no American Idol but I do enjoy singing. Especially in the shower where I sound fantastic! (I'm sure you do, too.) And today was a great day for dancing and singing in the studio! Stevie Wonder, Lady GaGa, and let's not forget one of my favs, Patsy Cline, were all there with me, providing just the right background for some brisk palette knife work and soft brush strokes. Stay tuned for a preview of fresh new paintings!

Speaking of American Idol, I sure hope Lee DeWyze wins. I love that he was just some guy working in a paint store in Chicago and now he's a household name. He's got my vote. . .go Lee!!!

Beyond being a huge success, the last several shows have been outstanding experiences. My husband Simo and I have loved visiting some of the greatest southern cities, and have had the privilege of meeting some amazing people. Art buyers have great genetics: they're smart and savvy, interesting, fun, and unique! Thanks to all who have adopted my work - I am most grateful.

We have also had the pleasure of eating at some great restaurants along the way. It is now an official ritual that whenever we go to Birmingham, Alabama, our first night is dinner at Jim-n-Nick's BBQ, where the restaurant's motto is "lower and slower". (To Simo's amazement, I have no difficulty finishing a half-slab of their baby-back ribs!) After setting up our display for the 4Bridges Show in Chattanooga, we made our way to Rembrandt's Coffee Shop in the Bluff View Arts District where we had cheesecake and cappuccino. Of course not every meal is a feast - we religiously pack sandwiches, fruit, vegetables, and lots of water to balance out the trip.

My garden is coming alive (pictured here) with something new blooming each week - what a joy to be back home for a couple weeks. Now it's time to get back to work in the studio. Each morning is a gift, a chance to give of yourself and experience life fully. I'll be posting photos of new paintings soon!

Finally, spring is here! It's supposed to be a beautiful couple of days in the Atlanta area - YAY! The timing is perfect - I just finished a commission of 4 paintings for a hospital in the Houston area, and am shipping an additional 25 paintings for a group show in April at the Perlow-Stevens Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. One (which happens to be entitled "Spring Fever") is pictured here.

I Married an Accordion Player

Yes, it's true. My husband Simo is an accordion player - he plays gobs of music from his home country Serbia, plus amazing Scandinavian, Greek, Russian, Irish, and English tunes - you name it, he can play it. And he sings well too.

For more than a decade we have been traveling to California each August where Simo teaches and performs music at Lark - a music camp near Mendocino. I was delighted to read about Joanna Newsom's success this week in the NY Times. I remember Joanna from camp - she almost seemed like an apparition at times (in a good way). We had the pleasure of spending a few moments backstage with her and her band a couple of years ago when she played here in Atlanta - what a treat! If you want to change your mood and brighten your day, music can do it.

My dog Ruby is home from surgery - she's very swollen and tired. (I cry each time I look at her). The vet reassured us that the pressure in the eye was off the charts - 60+ (normal is under 20) so I know it was the right thing to do medically. It'll take some getting used to though. I'll post a photo in a few weeks once she's better.

First I wanted to send a big "thank you" to everyone who came to the art show in Naples this past weekend. Several of my paintings were adopted and I'm grateful to have my work in your collections!

I'm now back in my studio varnishing some paintings for an upcoming show at the Webb School in Knoxville, Tennessee. Pictured here is a painting I'll be taking to the show entitled "In Bloom I". (You can view the sister piece on my website.)

My dog Ruby is a constant companion in my art studio. Adopted from a pet rescue group (see: http://www.secondchancedogs.org/) more than 9 years ago, she charms all who meet her with good looks, soft fur, and awkward dancing (this wiggly thing she does with her butt). I'm still hopeful she'll eventually learn how to hold a brush to assist me in the studio. Sadly the vet told us this week that Ruby's glaucoma has advanced - she will have surgery next week to remove her disease-stricken eye. Here's a photo of her at Christmas.

Every time I drive by a piece of land where a grove of trees was cleared to make room for a new condo building, I want to vomit. Do we really need more concrete and less photosynthesis? (I think not). That's why I'm happy to see Virginia-Highlands, a hip neighborhood in the middle of Atlanta, working to improve and preserve their green space. My Dog is a Farter

The past 2 weeks I've been painting away in my studio - finishing 3 commissions, several pieces for a new gallery (more on that later :), and getting ready for a show next weekend. It's a busy time, and I'm grateful for it.

While in the studio my dog Ruby is usually there napping. Occasionally she gets up to take a stretch and go outside through her little doggie door. As it turns out, I began to smell something not so pleasant one morning. . .and then turned to see Ruby slinking out her door! Could it be that she knows when she farts? A few minutes later she peaked her head in and I gave her the "OK" to return.

It happened again a few days later. What can I say? My dog is a farter. Now if I can just get her to leave before she does it again. . .

Summertime in New York

My husband and I visited New York city a few weeks ago. And, as usual, NY doesn't disappoint. Full of life and interest (including those colorful characters on the subway), we enjoyed great weather and as much art as we could fit in. From Chelsea to the Met and MOMA, the immersion was a treat. Here we are on the rooftop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a sunny afternoon.

Music was a big part of our focus as well, where we saw an organ demonstration at St. John the Divine cathedral, a couple of Broadway shows, and an evening of jazz at MOMA.

If you're looking for a get-away to feed the senses, New York is the place.

The Dog Days of Summer

This year's 4th of July was a-mazing! The heat wave in Atlanta actually lifted for a couple of days - just in time to enjoy the fireworks without melting. I don't know about you, but summer is flying by. I've had ups including great art shows in Philadelphia (Rittenhouse Square), Virginia Beach (Boardwalk Art Show), and Memphis (Perry Nicole Fine Art Gallery).

And I've had downs. I began volunteering for hospice last August, and my patient died a few weeks ago. Working with the family for 10 months, I watched as death came slow and deliberate. It was heavy. It was also a privilege to spend time with this family. Society puts so much emphasis on our entrance - the birth of a child. What about our exit? One thing I've learned: hospice is a service that supports the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the dying. Hospice makes walking through the exit door comfortable and dignified.
